I am an American and I don't particularly like our hyper-tipping culture -- but I took one vacation to Europe and even though I had been warned I was downright shocked at how consistently terrible table service was. When waiters aren't trying to get money out of you, they are unhelpful jerks. On a scale of 0 to 10, where 0 is no tipping and 10 is American-style tipping, I think maybe a 6 is the right level. Zero tipping would be horrible.

I guess that depends on the country you've been. Let me guess: France? :P

Service in Europe does vary a lot from country to country. Also it depends on whether the waiter resents asshole Americans, so don't extrapolate too far from your personal experience. I've been to America many times and I do not enjoy the dining experience at all. The servers are constantly and transparently angling for tips, from the over-familiar introductions ("Hi I'm Kevin and I'll be your server for this evening"... yikes, I came here for food not a relationship!) to the repeated interruptions to ask if everything is okay with the meal. What, am I supposed to answer with my mouth full of food?? Is it likely that the food went from "fine" 2 minutes ago to "not fine" now?? How about this, I'll call you over if I have a problem with the meal, otherwise leave me the fuck alone. The best service is there instantly when needed, but completely invisible when not. And in case you're wondering where that kind of service is available: Japan, where attempting to tip your server is considered extremely insulting.

This makes me wonder why you would take a job as a waiter in America..?

It's not often out of choice.

Noticed the same issue in Australia. Table service is abhorrently bad, as is most customer service here. My wife (an Australian) and I notice a huge difference in the quality of service when we go back to the US for a visit. Waiters and Waitresses get paid the same no matter the effort they put into service here. I for one would hate to see the tipping culture go in the US.
