If I could change one thing about traffic patterns it would be to do away with the concept of early merging. Don't early merge! and don't consider it "cheating" to drive up to the merge point! Everyone drive to the merge point, and then ZIPPER MERGE at the point. If you merge early that is a waste of road space and confuses the algorithm. Just go to the point and merge one-and-one like a zipper.

@causby is absolutely right. All the drama and angry feelings at a merge come from people thinking it's somehow "polite" to merge early. What the vid said about traffic waves remains true, though, and I have been doing it for years (learned it from 18 wheelers). Try to keep a constant speed no matter what other people do.
