Originally, although the puzzle looks perfect there are tiny gaps between the pieces. The area of these gaps adds up to the same area of the 'missing square' when the pieces are rearranged and there are no longer gaps between the pieces.

The bigger angled piece is wider than the smaller one. When it is moved to the left, the 2 L-shaped pieces have to stack with the fat parts above/below the thin parts, but when the large angled piece is moved back to the right, the 2 L-shaped pieces only stack thin side to thin side (wider, but shorter, same area to cover).

The frame is not a perfect square. It is angled in a way so that the rectangle appears to be a square. You can tell by carefully looking at the first piece that he moves. The shape is significantly different when it is placed on the upper left corner.
