I agree with everything but the last part saying that it's acceptable to not use apostrophes when you should. Using apostrophes incorrectly either way shows that a person has never managed in their entire life to focus their attention for the fifteen minutes it takes to learn this simple skill, and puts that fact on display for the whole world to see.
