These seems odd. How was she not able to understand what he was saying? And why would a valid pronunciation include the h sound?

  If she was reading his lips a bit, Quirl and Whirl would look the same. Also he's speaking through a mike and speaker system, plus his voice is gravelly. As far as the h in whirl, it's pretty common for english words, IMO.
