Do electric guitars really vary in their sound that much? Seems like if he could get the same model it would sound literally exactly the same.

Yes. Everything...EVERYTHING affects the sound. The grain of the wood. The flexibility of the finish. How your hand slides on the neck. The exact material holding the strings on the end. It will all affect the resonance and tone and also the physical experience of playing it. And of course the memories and emotions affect the subjective experience too. Of course what happens when the signal leaves the guitar is another story...the amplifiers and speaker cabinets obviously make a massive difference, but no two guitars, even electric, are exactly the same. You and I might not notice the difference but a serious guitarist who really knows the instrument will.
