Evolution is great if you think about it. They might waste lots of energy here but its worth it if the hunter has to waste just as much energy since he cant hunt as efficent and therefor wont increas in numbers as much. It wont save everyone in that situation but to make it hard for the hunter the species as a whole has a higher chance to survival.
