Love the idea, and it certainly seems plausible. I wonder how the economics work though - because if it costs more than the current oil supply it will be hard to get the majority of people to start using it (very sadly).

I definitely think you are right here, although maybe the machine will cost a lot more short term, but can be utilised for a longer period of time. Its a possiblility..? what do you think?

He better didn't tell about is idea and started collecting alot of plastic. Then he makes a big machine of his little converter and convert the plastic to oil. He sells it and he would be rich. I wonder how much this would cost and what is needed for the heeting up.

@xSnipeStroker- Keep in mind man, removable parts and mass manufacturing (simple as they may seem) were only finally invented in the last century (give or take 20 years). This means that technologies like this and all technology we have is VERY primitive still. There are things we can discover... new methods of production, new methods of using resources, that can bring expensive technologies to our homes or even the poorest of countries.

Take a look at Plastoil in Switzerland. They produce about 7.5 Million tons a year of Oil from plastic. http://www.plastoil.com/.php

I think that it takes more energy to produce oil from plastic than the energy produced by oil... otherwise, it would be in contradiction with the first law of thermodynamic. what's the point of producing energy with more energy? plus, i think that the future is not in finding a way to produce more oil but in finding a new source of energy. Have you heard about global warming?

@kuy2gnu: What you say about law of thermo (actually it's the law of conservation of energy) is true -- but the point is we can convert tons of plastic to oil instead of: a) dumping plastic into landfills where they last forever and leach chemicals into the groundwater, and b) mean fewer new oils wells would be needed It probably would cost more than drilling and pumping out of the ground though... As for global warming -- true it won't help if we continue to burn fossil fuels instead of finding alternative sources, but my understanding is we are still 10 to 20 years away from an economically viable alternative (besides nuclear) that will produce enough energy.
