As far as I understand from readings about that case, the brain's need for oxygen decreases radically as the temperature drops. She was trapped under the ice for almost half an hour, before her heart stopped beating. By then, her temperature was so low, that no braincells died, thus she could be reanimated and got almost complete healthy again - despite pale skin and some minor damage to her nervous system. Surgeons sometimes use the knowledge gained from that case to freeze patients to a controlled death, being able to do e.g. brain surgery that couldn't be done under normal circumstances.
