If one wheel is one step wrong, the entire message will be garbled. But if one patch is wrong, only two characters will be mixed, but the message will very likely be readable anyhow... Therefore the calculations show the likelyhood for everything being entirely correct, not the likelyhood for the enemy getting the message contents by chance. /Ake

By the way, since the patchboard results in a plain letter substitution, it can be solved by frequency analysis. Therefore, it is really only the code wheels that provide the encryption (once the principle is known). /Ake
