I wonder what the capacity of each elevator cab is, and how long it take in a real situation to evacuate a floor (you'd obviously need more than one system on larger buildings). Also, why do they have to wait for a firefighter to go up? Isn't that a huge waste of time? Why not have people trained on each floor to act as fire wardens and get people into them? I'm still thinking that for able bodied people, that the stairs will be faster, assuming it's a safe route and there is enough capacity there too.

It think there is a certain ability to remain cool under dangerous situations that isn't as easy as everyone expects. Although stairs would be the safest most practical way to descend a building if a floor is on fire a route needed to bypass said floor would need to be available, thus is where the external stairs and in this case elevator comes in. Although i strongly agree with the capacity issues they seem to be able to only hold several people at once adding in the slow speeds and long unloading times i can't think of this as a very practical idea.
