Yeah we're doomed in Britain, but it's not because of the roads in China...

  That was so out of left field. I wish I had seen the full context of why he thought Britain was doomed.

  Its (in part) reference to a much loved program in the UK called Dad's Army. Where a character Private Fraser was iconic for saying "We're Doomed!". I've added this clip as its one of my favourites from him: https://vimeo.com/272989556 || Aside from that I wouldn't look much deeper.
