Venice beach, California. The event occurs every few years along the coast of southern California, though locals say this year’s sea sparkle is especially vibrant, possibly related to historic rains that soaked the region and generated algal bloom.
Professional surfer Tom Dosland was caught on camera during a scary freefall from a huge wave in Maui, Hawaii, on January 27. Dosland described the incident to Surfer Magazine later, saying that striking the face of the wave was "a brutal beating, like I was in a car crash." Thankfully, Dosland emerged unscathed, but his board was completely destroyed.
