I’m an American so obviously removed from the particulars over there. But this argument seems way too one-sided and simplistic. And the idea that everyday people are stupid dimwits who don’t know what’s best for them seems incredibly condescending and elitist.

How ironic, I am in the UK but the video is unavailable here. Anyway, I'm interested to look it up but you hit the nail on the head Dave! 'the idea that everyday people are stupid dimwits who don’t know what’s best for them seems incredibly condescending and elitist'... absolutely!! I and millions of others knew exactly what we were voting for.

*I'm NOT interested to look it up. Come on boyt, you're either very lazy or completely inept by not having added an edit function to the comments by now.

... except for the fact that the people who voted "leave" voted for something impossible. A few "experts" might have been able to tell them what to expect. Oh, wait, they did.

It's impossible for a people to govern themselves? Why would any people on Earth vote to have their representative government FURTHER removed from them? Making their voices LESS heard? It's the same thing here in the US. We're a nation of 50 states. Why would any state choose to cede their authority over themselves to the federal government? People are more satisfied with their government the closer it gets to them and less satisfied the further removed from them it is.

Well this seems more about international trade than local government per se. And a big part of the issue is not so much the idea of financial independence but rather the fact that it was a decision with substantial economic repercussions that turns out not to have been well thought through. Brexit maybe a fine idea but now people are scrambling to figure out how to execute it without a significant disruption in trade, etc. Although I still do not understand why the border with Ireland is THAT massive of any issue. Seems like there are lots of borders in the world—though I do appreciate the historical backdrop that makes this particular border something to consider with care.

You as a normal citizen could spend your whole day diving into the intricates of cross-border trade, foreign relations, public health and the like, Dave? That's a full time job, it would actually make you a politician! Other people need to have other jobs to keep the country running, leaving the politics to the politicians who can actually spend the time to make educated decisions on those subjects. That's what democracy is. Also note that the UK is similar in size to some US states.

That’s how a REPRESENTATIVE democracy works. Brexit was not decided by politicians who were experts on economics and trade (if such politicians exist) but by referendum by the general electorate. Now the economists and trade experts (to the extent politicians are listening to them) seem to scrambling to find a good path forward to implement what barley over 50% of the population that was A Good Idea. That is why democracy is the worst form of government except for every other form of government. ;)
