In England we take space away from motorists to make bike lanes whilst in America it seems preferable to take the space away from pedestrians, no matter how much they need it!

  Well, in a nutshell, a bike can travel on the roadway as a legal vehicle, so bike lanes on the road are just a way of seperating traffic, not a necessity. That being said, downtown anywhere, USA will always be a mess.
