A lot of people are arguing over the correct answer to this algebra problem involving horses, horseshoes, and boots. A Facebook post with this problem has over 500,000 comments. Can you figure it out? In this video the correct answer is explained.

I did it once now and then when I was writing the whole process here again I've noticed that sometimes there are 2 horseshoes/boots drawn and sometimes only 1, which I guess that's the whole point to the confusion :) So here's my try: 1 Horse = X, 1 Horseshoe = Y, 1 Boot = Z. X + X + X = 30 3X = 30 X = 10 (1 Horse = 10) X + 2Y + 2Y = 18 10 + 4Y = 18 4Y = 8 Y = 2 (1 Horseshoe = 2) 2Y - 2Z = 2 Y - Z = 1 2 - Z = 1 1 = Z (1 Boot = 1) Z + X + Y = ? 1 + 10 + 2 = 13

This video and all others like it are stupid. It is <i>intentionally</i> misleading with the single-double horseshoe thing, but moreover by doing that it is <i>unintentionally</i> meaningless. They never showed that a double- horseshoe is equal to double the value of a single horseshoe, and there is no valid reason to assume so. Maybe there's a volume discount on horseshoes or maybe it's not two horseshoes, maybe it's a single object fused to look like two horseshoes. Same with the boots: a single boot is likely to cost you more in a store than a pair of boots. You can't make assumptions in math, so this "math problem" is unsolvable and the originator is a twit.

And then to add to the confusion they included an order of operation problem, which, let's face it, a LOT of people still get wrong anyway and is a whole other facebook celebrity

Agreed, the narrator should at least acknowledge the single horseshoe is not necessarily half the single horseshoe. In algebra you don't n is half of m, or anything weird like that. Symbols don't generally work like that.
