I grew up with non-ABS breaking. And only a bad driver would just slam the breaks on. People adjust their breaking practices to avoid locks — what he referred to as "threshold breaking". I think the Non-ABS mode of the car would have slowed down better if he hadn't simply slammed his breaks down all the way.

Well yes of course Dave, but his point was to show what happens if you do slam the breaks. He also says that he needed to look out to not fall back to his old habit to release the breaks when the wheels start locking.
