Do you need winter tyres if you have 4WD?

A really fascinating and well documented display of the importance of tyres, but, who uses summer tyres? I've never even heard of them. In 30+ years of driving I've only ever had year-round or general tyres and I'd love to know how they compare with winter tyres. I normally buy a new car before the tyres are worn / need replacement so why are winter tyres not an upgrade offer with new cars?

I was curious after reading your comment and found a good article here. https://www.edmunds.com/car-reviews/features/tire-test-all-season-vs-snow-vs-summer.html Basically I think it boils down to rubber formulation based on expected temperature (winter tires will be rubbery and soft in heat and lose their tread fast), and tread patterns optimized for rain vs snow.
